MICHIGAN FORESTS FOREVER TEACHERS GUIDE
TREES & SITE SELECTION |
Invite an arborist, landscaper, or forester to your classroom to talk about the relationships between different tree species and different soils and sites.
From in-class research (see Soils & Soil Survey activity), determine the "best" trees to plant at your school, park, or other location in the neighborhood. Incorporate what the guest speaker says about resistance to salt, air pollution, soil compaction, soil fertility, and other environmental factors relevant to trees living with people. What size tree should be planting to give the best odds of survival? A seedling? A sapling?
How should trees be planted? (see Planting Trees)
